Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages by AIF

Selecting the Right Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages is insurance for damage to a vehicle(s) and bodily injury resulting from an auto accident. Insurance of this type can cover a variety of instances depending on the kind of auto insurance that has been purchased.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Liability

Liability Coverage protects the other person(s) involved with an accident that is your fault.  Liability coverages include Bodily Injury Per Person, Bodily Injury Per Accident, Property Damage and Uninsured Motorists Coverage.

Let’s say for example, you have 50/100/50.  $50,000 is for Bodily Injury, Per Person.  If you should have an accident and a person was severely injured and incurred $75,000 in medical bills, your insurance will only cover $50,000.  $100,000 covers the Total Bodily Injury Per Accident.  This is used when multiple people are injured in the same accident.  So if you’re involved in an at-fault accident and 5 people are severely injured, your insurance will only pay $100,000 total.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This coverage is for bodily injury at the same minimums as those listed for liability coverage. Using the example above, the Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage would be $50,000. This amount protects you if you’re in a car accident and the other driver is at fault – and that driver has minimum liability limits or doesn’t have car insurance! This coverage also provides insurance for injury-related medical expenses and costs associated with repairing damage to your car.

“Although purchasing only the minimum State required Bodily Injury Insurance limits can get you a cheaper auto insurance rate, if you cause a serious accident, you are likely to have inadequate coverage due to the price of cheap insurance.  Many vehicles today have a much higher value than the Missouri minimum Property Damage Liability limits of $10,000.  You would be responsible for any amount of property damage over the minimum limits, if that is the coverage you purchased.  Multiple persons with severe injuries can each have damages of hundreds of thousands of dollars or more.  That’s why it is important to buy more than the Missouri minimum Bodily Injury Insurance limits.”

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Comprehensive & Collision

Many people refer to Comprehensive and Collision Insurance as “full coverage”.  The correct term is “comprehensive and collision”.  Comprehensive and collision coverages are optional; however, more often they are typically required as part of a car loan or lease agreement.  Think about it — when you cause an accident, what is your first thought after you see the damage done to your vehicle?  If you have liability coverage only, you could be left to pay for your own damages out of your pocket.

Comprehensive Insurance Coverages

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Comprehensive will help cover costs of damage to your vehicle that result from an event that is not an accident, such as severe weather or fire, theft, vandalism, hail, falling objects, animals or fowl, natural disasters, and all glass breakage.

Collision Insurance Coverage

Collision Coverage pays for damages to your vehicle after a collision with another car or object.  There are other additions you can add to your policy and we will review them with you.  Those are Medical payments, Rental car reimbursement, Emergency roadside assistance and more.

Medical Coverage

Medical coverage is anMissouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000 important auto insurance coverage. Also known as Med Pay, medical car insurance covers the costs (up to a limit) for injuries that you, or your passengers may have when riding in and while loading or unloading the vehicle.  You and your family may be covered as a pedestrian also.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage is an extended form of MedPay. PIP may cover expenses that are related to injury, but not necessarily medical, such as lost wages, childcare and funeral costs. PIP coverage is currently required by sixteen states. If you are already insured under a good health insurance policy, then fortunately, you may not need to buy more than the minimum required amount of PIP or MedPay insurance–enough to cover your health insurance deductible or other out-or-pocket expenses such as co-pays.

Missouri Auto Insurance – Optional Coverages

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000There are many optional auto insurance coverages, and some may qualify you for additional auto insurance discounts.  These coverages include Glass Breakage Coverage, Emergency Roadside Assistance Protection, Rental Reimbursement Coverage and GAP Insurance coverage.

You can learn more about these coverage types, and additional coverages by visiting our Auto Insurance page, and by reading the Bodily Injury and Property Damage Coverage pages in your policy.

The Premium

All auto insurance policies involve a premium, which is the payment a customer makes to have auto insurance. Premiums for auto insurance can be extremely divergent and are determined by a number of factors. Gender is the major determinant for auto insurance premiums. Statistically, men are 80% more likely to be involved in an accident, and therefore have a greater need for insurance. Auto insurance premiums for men are typically higher than auto insurance premiums for women. Similarly, teenagers are considered high risk and will have to pay higher auto insurance premiums as well. The auto insurance premium can be reduced if the teenager takes a defensive driving course. Many states require teenagers to take defensive driving courses in order to obtain a driving permit and auto insurance.

The Deductible

It is customary for auto insurance plans to have a deductible that the customer is responsible for before the auto insurance provider offers coverage of expenses. Deductibles can have an effect on the coverage available under an auto insurance plan.

Most drivers are not aware of the risks they are taking when they purchase just the
state minimum insurance that is required by Missouri law.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Key Points

You may be asked for proof of insurance at any and all of these times: at vehicle registration, at the time of an accident, and any time when driving the vehicle. It is suggested that the owner of the car keeps proof of insurance in the car at all times, instead of on his or her person, so that it can be available at all times, no matter who is driving.

You should never drive without Missouri auto insurance.  Any violations of state law regarding auto insurance could result in a hefty fine, suspension of your driver’s license, and possibly time in jail. The dire consequences of driving while uninsured are not worth the neglect of paying for insurance. The chance that an uninsured driver will avoid detection is slim; he is likely to be caught and strictly punished–not to mention and increase in the cost of insurance for 3 to 5 years.

Fenton Missouri All-Terrain Vehicle Insurance Coverage

Fenton Missouri All-Terrain Vehicle Insurance Coverage is Very AffordableFenton Missouri All-Terrain Vehicle Insurance Coverage by MJM Insurance® of Fenton (636) 343-5000

Many people own ATVs (all-terrain vehicles), whether they’re used for work or play.  Unfortunately, many of ATV owners are not covered by their Home or Auto Insurance policy.  If their ATV is stolen or badly damaged it may not be covered.  MJM Insurance® of Fenton can help you get the Fenton Missouri all-terrain vehicle insurance coverage you need to protect you and your investment.
Many states require ATV insurance for vehicles operated on state-owned land, and your homeowners policy might not cover you, or other riders on your ATV, if you ride off your own property. That’s why Fenton Missouri all-terrain vehicle insurance coverage  is especially important.

There are several types of ATVs and MJM Insurance® of Fenton can help you get the correct Fenton Missouri all-terrain vehicle insurance coverage you need.   The types of all-terrain vehicles include:

Off-Road Utility Vehicles

A “Utility vehicle” is “any motorized vehicle manufactured and used exclusively for off-highway use which is sixty-three inches or less in width, with an unladen dry weight of 1,850 pounds or less, traveling on four or six wheels, to be used primarily for landscaping, lawn care, or maintenance purposes.”

  • Utility vehicles do not meet the definition of a motor vehicle or ATV, and will not be titled and registered.  Examples of off-road utility vehicles include, but are not limited to:
    • Minicab,
    • Mule,
    • Gator,
    • Max/Buffalo, Etc.
  • Utility vehicles cannot be operated upon the highways of this state unless they are:The operator must have a valid driver license, but does not have to be motorcycle qualified.
    • Owned and operated by governmental entity for official use,
    • Operated for agricultural or industrial on-premise purposes, or
    • Operated by handicapped persons for short distances on secondary roads.
  • Cities/counties are allowed to issue special permits for utility vehicles to be used on county roads within the county or on highways within the city to licensed drivers for a fee of $15. The fee is to be kept by such city/county.
  • The seller of a utility vehicle is responsible for collecting and remitting all applicable state and local tax on new utility vehicles.
    • Utility vehicle owners may qualify for a “farm use” tax exemption.

Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles

A “Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle” is “any motorized vehicle manufactured and used exclusively for off-highway use which is sixty-four inches or less in width, with an unladen dry weight of two thousand pounds or less, traveling on four or more nonhighway tires, with a nonstraddle seat, and steering wheel, which may have access to ATV trails.”

  • Recreational off-highway vehicles do not meet the definition of a motor vehicle or ATV, and will not be titled and registered.

MJM Insurance® of Fenton offers a variety of ATV insurance coverages, including:

Comprehensive

In most circumstances, Comprehensive ATV insurance coverage pays for damage to your ATV if it’s caused by an event other than a collision. For instance, if your ATV is damaged by fire, theft, vandalism, flooding, or an animal, Comprehensive coverage will likely apply. You just pay the deductible you selected, and your ATV insurance will cover the rest.

Collision

Collision pays for significant physical damage to your ATV if you hit another ATV, a tree, a parked vehicle, a big rock, a stump, a fence post, or other obstacle. You just pay the deductible you selected, and your Collision coverage will pay for the rest. Due to the rough nature in which many ATVs are used, Collision does not provide coverage for scrapes, scratches, minor dings/dents, and other cosmetic/non-structural damage.

Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability

ATV insurance coverage offers Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability to pay for injuries to people or damage to property caused by your ATV. Liability coverage also protects your assets, up to the limits you choose.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist

If the person at fault for an accident doesn’t have insurance – or doesn’t have enough insurance – Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury will pay for injuries and damages you suffer that the at-fault party is legally liable for, such as medical treatment and lost wages. You simply select the amount of ATV insurance coverage you want, and you’re protected up to those limits.

Several factors can affect your ATV insurance rate. You may not be able to control them all, but there are a few things you can do if you have ATV insurance coverage and want to keep your rates low:

Ride Smart.  If you have violations on your driving record or claims on your ATV insurance policy, your rates will be higher.  Choose the right ATV for your needs. For example, if you race ATVs, those vehicles are considered more aggressive machines, and typically cost more to insure.

Similar to  Fenton Missouri all-terrain vehicle insurance coverage, MJM Insurance® of Fenton offers recreational vehicle insurance, boat insurance, powersports insurance and motorcyle insurance coverages.  Owning additional ATVs on your policy will qualify you for multi policy discounts.  Please contact one of our insurance agents for any assistance.

According to The Missouri Department of Revenue, you have 30 days from the date of purchase to title and pay sales tax on your newly purchased ATV.  If you do not title the ATV within 30 days, there is a title penalty of $25 on the 31st day after purchase. The penalty increases another $25 for every 30 days you are late with a maximum penalty of $200.

Motorcycle Riding Safety | Fenton MO

Motorcycle Riding SafetyMotorcycle Insurance | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000

So you bought a motorcycle…great choice!  You are most likely to save money on gas, parking, and repairs.  However, you are also most likely to not be seen by motorists in vehicles.  Proper riding gear is critical for motorcycle riding safety. Although Missouri has endorsed a bill that would allow motorcyclists to choose not to wear helmets; it is still current law to wear helmets. Read more about Missouri motorcycle law.

To ensure motorcycle riding safety you should invest in a DOT or Snell-certified helmet, eye protection, leathers, riding boots, and leather gloves. When it comes to buying riding gear, no piece of equipment is more important than a quality helmet. There are many styles and brands to choose from, which is why MJM Insurance® of Fenton knows choosing a motorcycle helmet can be as difficult as choosing the right motorcycle. More information can be found in the Missouri Motorcycle Operator Manual.

Another important step to motorcycle riding safety is having a regular maintenance routine. Establishing a regular motorcycle maintenance schedule can help you avoid potential safety issues. It’s also a good idea to become familiar with your bike’s owner’s manual as maintenance requirements can vary between models.

Motorcycle Riding Safety Checklist

Tires: Stay aware of the tread depth and look for unusual wear patterns. Always make sure your tires are at the correct pressure because low tires are likely to blowout and over-inflated tires wear more quickly.

Oil: Check your oil every couple weeks and keep up with regular oil changes. Changing your oil is a simple and an inexpensive way to keep your bike in good shape. If your bike is older or you drive it regularly for long distances, you’ll need to change your oil more often.

Lights and signals: Check your headlights, brake lights, high and low beams, and turn signals regularly. Remember motorists in larger vehicles may not see you on the road.  The last thing you want is to have an accident because your lights weren’t working.

Battery: Examine your battery and cables for corrosion or loose connections. Use a voltmeter to test the battery or visit your local repair shop.

Brakes: Be aware of the brake pad thickness and the brake fluid level. When brake pads wear thin, your ability to effectively stop is compromised. Top off low brake fluid to the “full” mark or change it according to your owner’s manual instructions.

Chain: Use a commercial spray to lubricate the chain liberally and often, especially if you’re riding your bike every day. Dryness causes friction that can lead to poor performance or the chain could potentially break while you’re riding.

Fuel: Examine the fuel lines, keeping an eye out for leaks or other damage.

Steering: Check and tighten your handlebars and the steering nut. Turn the bars to make sure your steering feels smooth and tight and replace the bearings if the steering feels loose in any way.

Once you have your bike, your safety equipment and are ready to ride…. you will need motorcycle insurance.  MJM Insurance® of Fenton offers exclusive coverage for both you and your ride.  Our agents are ready to help and will ensure you will receive the personalized attention you deserve. Getting affordable motorcycle insurance coverage doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice proper coverage, it means that we are finding the best deal with the best coverage!  Don’t forget you could also qualify for many discounts like multiple policy, good rider, homeowners and more!
